10. Focus on the language learner- Schmitt

 Reflection:

It is very important to focus in our learner's problems when teaching, some of them may have different cultures, reasons of getting motivated or even learning styles and we need to know all that information about them and some other aspects like: why they're learning a new language (some may need it for school or their job), if they're trully interested in learning (some parents make students take English classes when they don't even like them), etc.  All these aspects are important to understand and develop a good quality education and to help them as much as possible to complete their goals.

9. Sociolinguistics- Schmitt

 Reflection:

Sociolinguistics is the study language and society, cultural aspects are of great importance in this branch of linguistics.  It includes standard, non-standard and codification aspects:  the standard forms are the well-known ones, the non-standard are sometimes discriminated by experts and called "poor" or "incorrect" varieties.

8. Psycholinguistics- Schmitt

 Reflection:

Psycholinguistics is the study of the process that occurs in our brains when learning a language. There is more bilingual people than monolingual in the world, this has woken up the scientific's doubts about their learning process.  Knowing more than one language opens your mind and gives you a chance to get to know more about other cultures, and of course, you will have more sources to look from when researching for something in special.

7. Second Language Acquisition- Schmitt

 Reflection:

Its the process of learning a language, people usually have a previous knowledge of it or another language dominated.  Its obvious that a lot of things can make this hard, for example:

-first language (students want to translate everything and this is not a good habit because they will get used to it and some words can't be translated).

-Their social and cultural aspects (we live near the US, that is why a lot of people can speak English, but maybe people that is living in the south part of Mexico won't, because they don't have the influence of the country near them).

-Previous knowledge (young people are used to listen to music or play videogames in English, remembering this vocabulary will help them a lot).

5. Pragmatics- Schmitt

Reflection:

“Pragmatics studies the factors that govern our choice of language in social interaction and the effects of our choice on others.”  It became a discipline over the past 30 years, it doesn't consider language as a product, but the relation between it, for example through messages and language uses.

4. Discourse Analysis- Schmitt

 Reflection:

Discourse analysis is consisted of the language that we use during our daily lives, for example, during my day I wake up, get ready for school and on my way I listen to the radio and I hear vocabulary and sometimes dabates of a certain topic, then, I get to school and we start taking subjects that help us develop this skill.

A discourse analyst studies long and short texts, is interested in real text, study language independently and typically study long passages of text.

3. Vocabulary- Schmitt

Reflection:
"Vocabulary" is a set of words that a language has so its speakers can communicate correctly using them.  Teachers often test their students' vocabulary knowledge and for this, they can also learn by using it, this means, by reading, writing, listening to conversations or having them, every test has a purpose and a difficulty according to the students' knowledge and level.

1. An Overview of Applied Linguistics- Schmitt

Reflection:

Applied Linguistics is a very interesting career, we have to understand the usage of language in order to use it correctly while teaching or learning it.  It involves a lot of different subjects, each category is very important and all these approaches will help us understand it better.

We will also have to know about other countries social, cultural and educationally to understand them better and also to develop a solution to their language problem.

We have four very important skills while learning or teaching a language, they are: listening, speaking, reading and writing.  All of them are necessary to communicate and at least two of them will be needed every time someone needs to use the language.

Introduction of Myself

I'm very honest, I like sincerity from others and me.
I ENJOY: Good friendships, conversations, a good book, freedom and expressing myself, being with people I love and what's good music for me, but specially my love to GOD.
I HATE: Lies, hipocrisy, rumors, critical people and comparisons.
I LOVE: What I selected as a future, I love teaching and my family and boyfriend.
I WISH: Only one thing, that I could have my Daddy with me.
I ALWAYS: Give my best on anything I do.

Chapter 2- Grammar Schmidt

Reflection:

Grammar is not only a set of rules that tell us how to write or speak, but it helps us a lot while doing it.

ESL teachers develop some skills such as repetition, transformation, question and answer, etc. to help their students remember the information correctly and prevent them from understanding messages or information incorrectly.

It is very important that students understand the grammar because its the base of the language, if you know how to write, you automatically know how to speak.   Chapter 2 Grammar Schmidtt

1. Applied Linguistics- Cook

Reflection:

Humans need language for almost everything that they have to do, in Applied Linguistics, we have to be able to deal with problems related to language, so if we have a problem we have to: understand it, analyze or investigate about it and then ask someone to give you their own opinion about the subject.  Applied Linguistics also has some other subjects related to it, some are more independent than others, such as sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, etc.

2. Prescribing & Describing-Cook

Reflection:
After reading and making the presentation I understand that theory is the way language is viewed by experts and practice is how we use it throughout life.

Children have a great trouble dealing with grammar and the correct use of language because most parents don’t correct them since they were little and they take their errors to school and have to work really hard to correct them if their parents keep on using them at home.  At school, they must follow the grammar rules and speak like the teacher does, she will always correct them.

Standard language is the one used at school and dialects is the language spoken at home and in our social life.  Language might have a lot of variations because people according to their social life or nationality use it in different ways and some people don’t tolerate this which leads to disagreements.
